Can I leave the country if…?
Hey April,
Unless you killed someone or are a previously convicted offender you will be on what is called “Informal Probation”. You don’t currently report to a probation officer and that would not change.
Enjoy your trip, you’ve learned your lesson (I hope) and if you can, ask in the countries you visit about drunk driving penalties. The responses will make you very happy that your DUI was in Texas and not in Europe.

Can you swing a dead cat in Texas without hitting a racist conservative?
Hey Fat Bottom,
The true question should be… If you hit him, how long will it take him to sue?
And then, If you should win (yeah, right) can you get a jury to award you any money (in Texas) ((Please read “Yeah, right” again))!

What song(s) do you think are good to break in a new listener to jazz?
Hey Mike,
I don’t like jazz! Never have.
But I love Winton Marsailas, his stuff is jazz, but it fools me into thinking that it’s not.
Basia – Time and Tide! I love this entire album. It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from her, but I think that she is one of the best instruments that I have ever heard (Yes, I did say she was an instrument!).
Good listening,

How about sending illegals to fight in Iran?
Hey Philosopher,
I am sorry to ruin your day… Every week we have swearing in ceremonies for alien citizens who are signing up for our military. Any person that wishes to gain citizenship in the U.S. only needs to enter a recruiting station and say they’d like to sign-up.
They are brought, after a background check, to courthouses and INS centers all over the U.S. (Here in San Diego, they actually do it on Aircraft carriers for the Navy — Hundreds every month), there they swear them in and BAM! They are legal!
But I am going to ruin my chances for best answer for what I am about to say:
ONCE THEY ARE SWORN IN, THEY ARE VALUABLE AMERICAN LIVES!
Sorry to break it to you Redneck, but I would prefer 1 of them to 10,000 of you to protect the shores of this country. I am pretty sure that in the event of an attack, you would have your VALUABLE American life — sitting up in Canada!

Is an inability to wait in line considered a disability?
Hey Prof,
First, it’s not a disability unless you have a physical challenge that is defined by the ADA
Second, are you talking about special lanes?
They already have them.
They are called check-out lines. We all wait in them.
If you notice, they don’t have special faster check-out lines for the disabled, just ones that are wider and lowered for their convenience.
So wait in line with the rest of us “disabled” folks!
James in San Diego
p.s. Better yet, why not shop online? There, no more waiting in lines….
Is it legal to write a buisness letter and try to trick them into giving you free stuff?
Hey Master,
Yup, well sorta… It will take a lot more than a letter. If you can imagine there are hundreds of letters that pile into Apple’s Customer Service center every month. Everyone has a request, Free computers for this class, Free printers for the senior center, Free iPods for the homeless…. you get my drift. Since yours is an “alleged” for profit venture, they will want your lawyers to contact their lawyers to review a licensing agreement. (since you are a start-up, they won’t have any background information regarding you.) In lieu of a licensing agreement, they will want you to let them see your website and provide information on how may hits you get in a month or so.
That being said, once they determine that you are legitimate, they will have no problem LOANING you equipment for your review and will request a copy of your review for future P/R stuff.
You could probably save yourself some money and send them a letter that says; “Hey. my name is Jack. After working hard, I bought an iPod with extra money I made during the summer. It was stolen and I am not able to buy another one. Is there a chance that you may have one that was returned, scratched or unsellable that you could send to me?
I would be eternally grateful!
Love, Jack.”
There is a very good chance that they will send you a new iPod or at least send you a certificate for one from a local store. Be forewarned, if you are 35 and they think that they are sending this to a 17 year old kid, you may end-up with egg on your face.
Good Luck,

How is Iraq supposed to form a successful democracy?
Hey Bot,
I think I will be able to better answer your question as soon as the Unites States is able to form its own successful democracy.
Anything before then would just be a theory that I have read about in fiction books that are referred to as “History”.
I’ll let you know if we ever get there!

Is “self-defence” an appropriate excuse for obviously pre-meditated murder?
Hey Mack,
Self defense is as it states — nothing more.
Murder (I don’t know why they have different degree’s) is something that you plan against known persons.
War and “Police Actions” are something that countries partake in to secure their viability and safety on “behalf of their citizens”. While we may not see the nuances of any of the three, it is the court of public opinion that is the ultimate judge. This is why, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, many nations stood side by side in defiance of Iraq. When the U.S. invaded Iraq, we couldn’t get enough countries to the table to have a decent game of bridge.
Public opinion is the glue that keeps these pieces we call Earth from breaking apart.

How can you home roast coffee beans effectively?
Hey Friendship,
First, Hire a professional roaster….!
Well, it’s difficult, maybe not that difficult. The problem stems from the fact that different beans need to be roasted to different levels of “done”, added to that are the fact that there are different styles to roast the same bean.
Lastly, coffee beans can go from done to burned in a matter of seconds — not a cheap lesson to learn.
If you really must know, see about working on a day off for a coffee company that does it’s own roasting. They won’t let you roast, but you can become friendly with the roaster and they will give you some trade tips.

Need help planning company christmas party?
Hey Amy,
I am assuming that this is for your employer. I think a wonderful team building effort would be to have a portion of your Christmas party devoted to:
1). A homeless shelter
2). A Senior Center or Nursing Home.
3). A Children’s center or your local YMCA/YWCA.
4). Project Head Start (they adopt families around your neighborhood during the holidays and arrange for donations.)
5). Toys for Tots.
6). Ask your clergy or social services agency for a project that they know needs assistance.
I would hope that everyone in your work would like this project. I know that you would all feel a great sense of accomplishment by helping out anyone in your community

We have to wear name tag with first and last name in high school kitchen. Can they make us wear it?
Hey Audrey,
You must be a hoot and a holler to work with!
What’s the problem? Shouldn’t you worry about other things like how often people are washing their hands, who isn’t wearing a hairnet, who’s not rotating stock…. !
But if you must, it would be perfectly acceptable to most authorities to list only your first name and last initial. Most Hospitals do this for their nursing staff. Oh, wait, that was only in the Psych ward….
Oh yeah, same thing.

i dont know what you all are talking about?
Hey Annabella,
When the U.S. Constitution was first passed and ratified by the states a popular way to test its limits was for those who wanted to, they would go to a public place (typically a sidewalk or in a park) and publicly speak their minds. Many of them would bring Soap Boxes (Actually a wooden box about the size of a crate) and stand on them so that they could be seen and heard. When they were finished with their argument, they would simply “get off their soap box!”

Hey Lina,
If you are on a strict “Caloric Intake” diet, then no – a calorie is a calorie!
Important tho, is when!
Don’t eat many calories before bed, in the evenings or when sick. These will not burn at the same rate that they would burn if your were active.

what do thomas jefferson and george washington have in common?
OK Truthster,
First there are the obvious:
1). They’re both dead!
2). They both were rich dudes!
3). They both were Virginia farmers that grew, among other things, hemp!
4). They both owned slaves!
5). They both had sex with their female slaves!
Then, the point I think you are going after:
They were both “Free-Masons”. At the time, Free-Masons were considered an underground, highly secretive, religious sect of high ranking members of what is now the U.S.
Now, they are just “Tax Exempt”!
James in San Diego
p.s. In another question someone refers to the “Illuminati” as the pre-cursor to the Free-Masons. Not so! Free-Masons never have advocated one world government, they were mostly concerned with the Stupid People putting other Stupid People in power. (Hence, the Electoral College in the U.S.)

are nuclear weapons REALLY wmd’s?
Hey Ministe,
I think the point that most are missing is this:
You can’t protect yourself from a WMD!
If you have a gun, and you decide to use it in a malicious way, I have ways to protect me and my family. If we are unprotected, the damage you inflict is finite!
The damage you inflict may disrupt my family for many years, but the rest of humanity will grow beyond that.
The 9/11 disaster, while horrific, was not caused by WMD’s.
When one uses a WMD, it is meant to annihilate, not just destruct. Many WMD’s alleged today, are not meant to cause collateral damage, just to end life forms. An A-bomb may level a square mile, but it will travel through villages and end all life, human and otherwise. An attack with Saran gas will have a very similar effect.
When you state that the “smaller everyday weapons” are the real WMD’s then you must add into that logic, deaths caused by cars, obesity (and Diabetes) , smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, AIDS and Lack of Health care. The death toll for any of the above, singularly outnumbers those deaths caused by small arms. While the aforementioned causes of death are all non-intentional they by far, cause a greater harm (and cost) to society than does a nuclear weapon.
The major reason, I think, that the populace has such a great concern for WMD’s is that it would not take a greatly organized effort to utilize them. For a few million dollars, one could take possession of a rogue country’s nuclear weapon, for less than that, several people could extract the toxic components from 200 pounds of Castor beans and poison a city the size of Los Angeles.
Lastly, and the saddest of all, is that we are a nation of headline readers. We will believe the wackiest things before we research them. We don’t want to know if something we like will hurt us — we want to know What do YOU HAVE that will hurt us! I will fill ballot boxes and spew lies from my mouth regarding the evils of ________, while at the same time, stuffing a burger and fries down my throat and washing everything away with a super sized coke and then drive home in my SUV the 3 blocks to my house.
Miraculously, the saving grace in all of this… There are people who ask the right questions, the Profiles in Courage that Kennedy wrote about. The people, not afraid of their own careers or what others think that ask the questions that matter. These are the antidote to any WMD’s. And these are the people that will save my, and most everyone else on this planets, collective arses!
And for them, I thank god.
Thank you for your time,

What can I use to thicken my blueberry pie filling?
Hey Carole,
When you say you are using flour are you using the right kind. Never use cake flour, it never thickens right. I use corn starch and very cold water, works like a charm every time.
I have never wanted to use gelatin, it would remind me of Blueberry Jelly. Why go through all that effort to have someone ask “Is this filling from a can?”

Plz help!! could somebody get me some information on UNHRC?
Well Teena,
UNHRC is the United Nations Human Rights Commission.
Usually they concern themselves with the plight of women in formerly communist countries as well as countries that traditionally put women in roles of less than equal footing with men (countries like Yemen and Iran)
Lately though, I have seen the name raised in dealing with the prisoners being held in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. I don’t know if they just hijacked the name, letterhead or if there is something more. I would contact the United Nations and ask for specifics regarding any publications that you might have.

Experience with Middlesex Management in NJ? GILL LANE APTS???? Lawyers…??? ANyone??
Well Stalyx,
Here’s the skinny. First, you are in New Jersey. Housing laws are different in every state in the U.S.
Most agree that:
1). Have they done anything illegal (other than giving you a copy of the signed lease)? Nope
2). Are they running a substandard housing tract (You’ve looked, did you see Rats? Open sewer lines? Exposed Wiring ?) ? Nope
3). Are they evicting you because they got a better offer/your race/your marital status/your sexual orientation? Nope
Your best case scenario is to:
1st DOCUMENT everything! (write down when you called, what message you left, whom you spoke to)
2nd Write them a letter stating that you feel that they are lacking in their customer service skills and that you don’t feel that they are able to respond to your needs once you are a tenant in possession. Give them a notice that you will not be moving in!
3rd Get a Proof of Mailing, preferably Certified Mail. You need proof that they got a copy of this letter.
4th GET THIS DONE NOW! Do not wait!
5th Be prepared to go to court! You may lose the first month’s rent. The landlord will have to prove that they were financially harmed. If you don’t move in, this will be harder for them to prove.
6th Make noise! If you have a local consumer helper on the news, try contacting them and see if they will help.
If you can afford it, contact a lawyer. If you can’t, there is usually an advocate at your local small claims court — They can give you limited advise. Contact legal aid. They are always very far behind! Don’t wait to do the other things! Legal Aid usually is up to the last minute and by that time, you may have no rights left.
Good Luck to you,
James in San Diego
Can a deaf person become a cop?
Hey Water,
Well, kinda! You can get hired in most departments as a CSO. That is a sworn police officer that works as the police department interface with the Community. My sister is one with the Riverside County (California) Sheriffs Dept.
How it works is that when additional assistance is needed in a situation, certain officers with specialized training are called. My sister gets called during Domestic Violence or Child Endangerment cases. She also responds to Rape or Molestation cases. She carries no gun, and is not a uniformed officer. Sadly, you can fully understand how your challenge would not and could not be adaptable to front line field officer work.
Additionally, other fields that PD’s could use you in would be things like Evidence and Crime Scene analysis, Accident Investigators, Ballistics and Identification Specialists. All of these would be open and welcomed by many PD’s to accomplish their diversity goals. Contact your local PD recruiting office or see them at a job fair — they will be happy to give you additional information.
I hope that this has piqued your interest in following a law enforcement career.

what do you mean by to have speedy, impartial and public trial?
Hey Precious,
Well as the Constitution says, That is our right! We’ve just adapted it over the years.
1). You must be arraigned within 72 hours (from your arrest).
2). Your trial date must be set within 30 days from the date of arraignment or the next nearest available date.
3). Impartiality is guaranteed by either a jury (of your peers) or a judge who swears that he will weigh all evidence without prejudice (Although most judges do enter with a summary judgment in mind.).
4). Public means just that. Your trial is held open to the public (as opposed to a secret trial that some countries have used to convict persons of espionage.).
All of these rights can be waived or changed by you. You can say you waive your right to a speedy trial if you need more time to accumulate evidence. If you feel that a public trial would be too much for the rumor mills, (e.g. a celebrity divorce, a financial settlement for personal injury, etc.) you can petition (ask) the judge to bar the public. You can also ask that the records be sealed by the judge (done mostly when children are involved).
These rights are not guaranteed for those non-citizens or those suspected of treason or a threat to the U.S. government (Scary how The President got those rights “temporarily suspended” during the fight on terrorists.)
Hope this helps,
James in San Diego
Have you revisited any of your own answers, to see for yourself how a question got resolved?
Hey Pieces,
Yup! All the time! I usually think that I know everything, and thankfully people on this site prove me wrong, everyday!
Several days ago, I answered a question regarding people in the middle east. I was right! I knew it!
A man answered with an answer that changed my opinion 180 degrees. If it had not been for this one guy, my narrow view would still be that — narrow.
So while some see this as only a game to see who will be number one in the points category, I see this as a way to get a little better educated and learn something important from my peeps!
Besides, Do you know how long it will take someone to get to level 10? I am surprised when I see a level 6 or 7! That’s a lot of time in front of the computer! Thanks for your time,

What’s the most efficient propulsion system to transfer engine power into water?
Well Weirdo,
I guess you would first have to look at nature. The fastest propelled things in the water are Porpoises. That, however, would make a really crappy boat design, flipping to and fro and such.
Next, look at what the government uses in their military. The two fastest and most efficient seem to be “Hover Craft” and “Jet”. The Jet system is used mostly in submarines but I have seen it used in pleasure craft in conjunction with propellers. The Jet system is my favorite. It uses a screw to intake water and propell it out through the rear of the vessel. A little expensive, but in water it probably causes the least amount of drag.
The Hover system is my second favorite. Less drag than the screw and was even able to move huge loads (260 tons) of building material and trucks across the Yukon river (2.5 miles) in Alaska during the building of the Trans America Pipeline during the 1970’s

Hey… michael,
I agree with the others about O/T…. except,
Unless you are on salary and your job is considered administrative. Many offices will schedule you for 45 hours per week and only pay you for 40 because they deduct an hour for lunch. If they deduct an hour for lunch, do them a favor — leave the building! It’s your time baby!

What is the difference between Almond essence and Almond extract?
Hey Steve,
Extract (allegedly) is the reduced fluid from a pressed almond. In reality, it is usually a chemical copy of what extract would taste like.
(Vanilla extract is usually made this way. A good bottle of proper extract will cost around $20 and that is for only a few ounces)
Essence is any portion of the almond tree that will give the odor of Almonds (not taste). It will be the perfume of Almonds. I have rarely seen Essence. Is probably sold only to commercial bakeries.
More importantly, since it is used only to flavor most drinks and is not that expensive, why the heck are you making sloe gin? If you said you were making a copy of Amaretto Di Sarona (at $35 liter) I could see it, but sloe gin?
It must be a Southern thing!

Any bad experiences at El Torito Restaurants?
Hey Bird,
Just a stupid question, did you happen to have any lettuce or more importantly, did you happen to have a Caesar Salad? I have an iron stomach and I’ve only been sick at two restaurants;
1). Portabello, in San Diego – CLOSED
2). El Torito, in San Diego – Still Operating
Both times I had a side Caesar style salad.
Tell your local health department. You don’t know if they are just one step away from figuring out what is making people sick from;
a). The Restaurant
b). A Supplier
c). A Sick Employee
Most of the above would not be evident in a standard inspection.
Also, lately in the Western United States, there has been a major outbreak of bacteria from shellfish – especially when they are served raw.
Hope you are feeling better!

Yup! One is irrelevant to the other. A Pell grant and a guaranteed student loan are not administered by the U.S. Government, just funded by them. Your school administers the Pell grant from a State fund. The Student Loan is administered by the fine folks at a bank in your neighborhood.

Is it possible to eat too much fruit, to a point of being unhealty?
Hey Lido,
In addition to what others have mention ed about too much and the moderation thing…
1). Excess vitamin “C” will cause you to lose calcium in your bones. Especially in the Jaws. Also see item 3, below.
2). Excess Follic Acid (melons) can’t be absorbed by your skin and hair, your hair end up looking and feeling lifeless.
3). Vitamin D. Too much vitamin D will cause other vitamins to not be properly absorbed into your bloodstream.
4). Too much dark, leafy, greens (Spinach, Kale, Greens) will have your body with an excess amount of Iron which will lead to brittle nails and constipation.
I really think that we all need to come with our own instruction booklets, with a warranty if we need to send these bodies back for a refund…. :-p

How to import small amount of Fabrics to California from Mexico?
Hey “G”,
Do you have a supplier? If you don’t, go there, find some you like and find out if they ship to California. If they don’t, they will need to hire someone (Export firm in Mexico). The reason for this is that they have to have someone fill out the export documents. Exporters have houses (on the U.S. side of the border) that they use for smaller shipments (also called drayage) and they can either forward for you or you can pick-up from them.
If it is a really small amount, you can bring across the amount yourself, or have a friend do it for you.
Check with the U.S. State department for the value and amount that you can bring without paying taxes. An exporter will be able to tell you what you owe for the shipping into the United States.

I think you should be Glad! You sound normal and you probably don’t stand too far out in the crowd (this IS what you want… right?)
Be Glad because you consider yourself bi! You are not into animals, dead people, children, pieces of fruits and or vegetables. Most people question alot of their sexual beliefs when they are growing up, so you are healthy and normal.
You do, however, sound really young. If this is true, RELAX! You’ve got time. I would, in the meantime, look into either a Gay/Straight alliance at your High School or College or look into a men’s bi-sexual discussion group at a local Gay and Lesbian Center. If you don’t live near one, consider joining up with a on-line Bi-Sexual interest group. Join one and ask questions, tell frustrations and share information. You will find the sessions are able to free your troubles and sad thoughts.
Keep in mind one very important item;
You are not alone!
There are millions of others out there that have gone through exactly what you have!
Good Luck and keep in touch!

why do we only say ” God Bless you ” when someone sneezes and not when they cough, or hick up?
Hey Michael,
It’s an old pagan term. It was originally believed that if you sneezed that a spirit/ghost in your body was trying to get out.
Saying “God Bless You” – meant that it was hoped that you were able to get (through God’s intervention) the spirit/ghost OUT!
Coughing or Hic-Ups happened so frequently that the early people felt this was a normal body function.
I wonder why it never caught on for the other end… Must have been frequent as well !!

After you die, how do you want to be remembered?
Hey E.W.P.
With the exception of “being the cause of something horrific”….
I just would like to be, …. remembered, …. Fondly!

Why do religious people of all faiths become so narrow minded and unable to listen to other points of view.?
Hey Pete,
I love this question!
Religion, in my opinion, is like a room full of people. You may have smokers, non-smokers, young, old, families, alternative lifestyles, druggies and non-“Room”-believers.
The only thing MOST seem to agree on is that they are in a room.
Everyone has a different belief in what the room should consist of. You even have some that figure that they will tell everyone the most populist ideas in order to “Hijack” the room for their own uses.
In many cases, some will even feel that the room is reserved only for their use and no one else.
The bible, to my knowledge, has no mention of ANY single religion, however, many have used the bible to attempt to cram their views/beliefs/morals down others, including other god (yes, the “g” is meant to be small) fearing members throats.
I believe in Faith, I believe in a Greater Good and I truly believe that there is a Power greater than me.
Most religious persons forget that we are ALL sinners. It is the sin you should hate… Never the sinner (That I know is in the bible!)
Because of this, I have no interest in any organized religion.
Just my thoughts,

Cranberry juice cocktail & Vodka?
Hey Broken,
I am glad you brought this up. About 2 years ago, I noticed that customers started ordering Cranberry Vodka. All were female! I would be very busy and several customers would come up to me and say “Cranberry Vodka” and I would wait….. “And” I would say… Their response was always the same… “And, What?” When I would work on slower nights, I would ask the same customers why they were ordering their drinks like that? They agreed that they would never order;
Coke and Rum
Tonic Vodka
Grapefruit Vodka
The response was just that, “Oh, that’s how my friends order it” I think what changed was that Flavored Vodkas really took off a few years ago and in the clubs, especially us busy ones, we never thought about it.
So now when I hear “Cranberry Vodka” — You are getting Vodka and Cranberry juice!
See you can teach a bartender a few new tricks.

P.S. If you don’t get a lime — don’t be too upset! We still call that a Cape Cod.
DUI Question?
Hey Sweetie,
I reviewed the proposed law known as HB 1222. It was written by Mark Hatfield and is sponsored by 5 other reps. It has very broad support among both parties.
The law changes Georgia’s DUI law by adding “Implied Consent”. Nearly every other state in the U.S. now has Implied Consent. What that means is that you currently have a drivers license in Georgia, you must submit to a chemical test (blood, breath or urine) — If you refuse, your license will be revoked for a period of not less than 1 year.
The reason for this proposed law is that currently in Georgia, if you are stopped and asked to submit to a test, you can refuse and nothing happens (Several Georgia House Reps and State Sens have used that privilege to avoid getting a DUI).
I find nothing in the text of the law that says anything about charging a DD with a DUI. the law text is not so legally written that an average person would have a problem understanding it.
I am listing a link to the proposed law below. If I am incorrect and this is not the proposed law, please contact me with the correct HB number and I will stand corrected.
Relax! I think that a bunch of old guys are just trying to scare everybody.

How do you know if an electric fence is switched on or off without touching it?
Hey Paula,
The correct answer is Jendralus!
A Blade of Grass will probably have moisture on it – Conducts electricity.
Pee, Water, Tongue, etc all have moisture on it – Conducts electricity.
Stick, Twig any other non-insulated object won’t have any effect on electric fence.
Meters, I don’t carry one around with me. Do the rest of you?
Listen for hum, tick, smell etc. If this were so true, you wouldn’t have so many people electrocuting themselves every year!
The only correct answer is to throw something metallic at it to see the reaction.

that does boiling soup have in common with jam donuts?
Hey Michael,
Both are boiled!
Jam must be boiled so that it doesn’t spoil while inside the donut. Additionally, if the jam were not reduced enough, you would have some very soggy Jam donuts!

What is the history of people’s last names like Black, White, Brown and Green?
Hey Girl,
It’s a great question.
Common names like you mention are French/English based. Others that emigrated to the land where they took the name were usually asked what their name meant, many times it would be taken from a tribal name (My name means John from the Black tribe hence, John Black. ), or from an area they emigrated from (Montenegro = Black Mountain; Greenland = Green; Montblanc= White Head/Mountain) and mostly because early in many countries, the tax man or the immigration official rarely spoke more than one tongue and relied on their best understanding of the language the the immigrant was from.
In the case of Freed Slaves, they rarely wanted any connection with their owner. So they would not take the name of the owner (Roosevelt, Montgomery, Johnson, etc) but would instead take the name of a President/Statesman they had learned of/admired. In lieu of that, “What’s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet…” So colors were just as good as anything else!

Just read a book that says Halloween is a manifestation of evil (occult ergo evil). What do you think?
Hey Emelia,
It was once known as “All Hallows Eve”. This was the day that you chased away the spirits so that your harvest would go well and you wouldn’t have to worry about those pesky ghosts until the spring (May Day).
Some have taken this to be that it was some sort of “Evil” day. No more evil than saying “Bless You!” when someone sneezes.

How about offering his services to the elderly….like mowing lawns, planting flowers, cleaning debris from yards, walking dogs, or just doing small things like that. Many elderly people can’t do these things and are willing to pay a young person to help them.
He could learn to be an entrepenuer and perhaps build an empire! Who knows?!
Hope that helps)
