Could you pick a worse profession in the world to try to ply in Hollywood?
First, On the Bartender gig: What’s in a Rum & Coke ? Ta Da!
You just found that you are as qualified as anyone else. ( I did it for 14 years).
Second, On the Server gig. An Actor that waits tables….In Hollywood! …. I have never heard that one before ! (I did it for 10 years).
On the Gay gig… In Hollywood, Who cares? The best way to get a job in a Gay bar in the West Hollywood area is to have sex with the owner – and that will last you til the next weekend. Nope, my experience with the bartending thing is STAND IN LINE! There are more acting gigs in the town than there are Bartending.
Try this, If you can, contact places like Sunset Parking. The have Valet gigs all the time in the Hollywood area. The work is hard but the tips are good. If you have the opportunity, try a few of the hotels doing the same thing or even Doorman/Porter. Those are fairly decent tipping jobs.
If you have a car, try away from the Hollywood area. Some of the restaurants in the Burbank, Los Feliz, North Hollywood area need help around this time of year because Holiday parties are coming up. Also, try college area places like Hof’s Hut. They aren’t so much on the experience thing as they are in the personality department.
Messenger work / Delivery. Once again, you’ll need a car. But it can be lucrative.
Inventory. They always do this work at night. It only pays OK, but it’s steady. Same for In-N-Out, They only start you at $9-10 per hour, but they will work around most schedules.
Sign Spinners. They pay from $12-16/hour. Usually just weekends.
If you say that you are that attractive, most retail in Beverly Hills that specialize in Boutique sales will hire at hourly + commission. Depending on the merchandise, that could be a nice comission.
I worked for 10 years in television production in Burbank. I was good friends with the Director of Personel at Warner Brothers/Burbank Studios. His office door was the only door that you did not have to go through security to get into the studio.
He told me that on a DAILY basis, GREAT looking Guys & Gals would come into the offices, ask to speak with him and say “I would do ANYTHING to get a job on this lot!”
That my friend, is what I all COMPETITION!

I’m going to suggest the Jello thing too, but back off on the amount of hot water you use to disolve the Jello mix — use about 1/2. The texture will be a little more rubbery, but will last for quite a long time.

Have your tried the fine folks at FAST SIGNS or CR Vinyl Signs.
Any place that does vinyl letters can do the signs. You can also do them yourself. Any Art’s and Craft store will sell the base. It’s called Foam Core. You can cut it with a razor knife or an exacto. The sign company will do something called “Weed & Tape” for your letters – which is you give them the sign dimensions and they will customize a vinyl sign that you place on your foam core and remove the backing tape. Very simple, like putting those stickers in your windows at Christmas, or a sticker in your car window.

How do you make swiss roll?
Hey Robin,
If you don’t want to go through the hassles of making a real Swiss roll, I’ve got a fake out way of making them that you will love!
Borrow cake pans from your friends – all the same size and shape, you will need about 6 total or you can do this with 2, it will just take longer.
Use your favorite boxed cake mix, prepare as directed.
butter & LIGHTLY flour pans.
Using a ladle, ladle enough cake mix into pan so that it’s about the thickness of a pancake. Spread the cake mix evenly around the pan with a spoon or spatula.
Cook for 6-9 minutes in the oven at suggested temperature (about 350) – KEEP CHECKING. They will be done when the sides darken slightly and the middle is firm.
Remove pans, cool slightly and put layer on cake/cookie rack.
When you have 5-8 layers, prepare a frosting (your choice, you may have to thin with heat or a little more water).
Frost each individual layer after you place on the previously frosted layer. When complete, frost the sides.
While this isn’t a rolled cake, the appearance is the same when sliced and you can use any combination of frostings (e.g. 1 layer jam, next layer frosting, next layer whipped cream, etc.)
Every time I try to make a Swiss roll cake, I either cook the cake too long or it breaks on me while I am trying to remove it/roll it. I found that this method makes me still look like a star at 1/4 the effort.

You bet there is a recourse. You can take them to Small Claims Court. Depending on the State that you live in your claim amount will vary from $2000 to $5000. If it doesn’t say “Up to 18 hours per week” then that is not what your agreement is. A Judge will look over the facts, the agreement and will discount any verbal agreements. A written agreement always trumps any verbal agreement. There are no Attorneys involved in preparing a Small Claims action, but they will have people at the court to assist you in filing your claim. I don’t know if there is an expiration to your agreement (in writing) and in the absence of this, a Judge will make a determination as to how long the agreement should cover.
However, A few items that the Judge will consider that may not be spelled out in the agreement are:
1). Was your job in Sales and you didn’t produce enough income to cover your position ?
2). Did the company have a down-turn in business that may have caused an unwritten “seniority” action to kick in?
3). Did you claim to have a certain level of expertise that was not demonstrated once you started work?
4). Did your disability (with any possible accommodations) interfere with the completion of your duties ?
These basics and a few more that a Judge may bring up will all have an impact on your claim.
LASTLY, You state that you are from a small town area and that you are on S.S.I. Please keep in mind that if you do follow through with a suit, regardless of whether you win or not, you will never get employment in your town.
It’s a balancing act that may fall over on you for the reward of a few thousand dollars.

P.S. The reason that attorneys told you that they wouldn’t take the case is that you weren’t willing to pay for them out of your pocket. This is nothing more than a Wage/Hour issue and every state limits attorney fee’s for Wage/Hour issues on contingency cases.

Recipe for veg. pasta???
Hey Sonali,
This one can’t be beat. Take your favorite veggies and cut them up. Toss with salt, Olive Oil and sliced Garlic. Spread on a baking sheet and throw into an oven for 20/30 minutes (350 f). (Or you can put on the grill)
Take favorite pasta, cook to order, toss with Olive Oil and your baked veggies.
Shred some fresh Basil and Parmesan or Romano Cheese on top.
Simple and healthy!

The two in question are Raju and Kevin (respectively) – If you go to their Profile, you will see that most of their Best Answers were “Chosen by Asker” – So they couldn’t have another account that “Votes” them best. Also, they have a tendancy to stay in a few selected categories. Kevin even answers this question in exceptional detail [ Go to Kevins profile and look at the question “Is #1 Kevin cheating?” — He answers it right there!] It may also help that Kevin is a member of Mensa & the father of twins (It’s that “Why, Daddy. Be forewarned, unlike Jam and Jelly, there are still bacteria in the Jar and what you are seeing is only temporary. If you boiled the Apple and Boiled the Jar, your “preserve” would last longer.

In addition to the fine things that have been mentioned. Follow the Germans — after rinsing AND patting dry, add a beaten egg and make a potato pancake. Cooks the same way, but the egg will help in an even browning. Serve with apple sauce or sour cream (really good if you have added green onion) or serve with Hot Sauce!

Substitute Honey for your sugar/molasses. You will have to reduce the amount of water/oil just a bit, but you won’t find that the cookies taste all that different. The cookies brown a little less though.

Well there are 3 ways to deal with this once and for all:
1). The obvious, always make sure that you have the right amount of money in your account. You signed this agreement when you opened the account, sorry.
2). Talk nicely with the Manager on Duty. Explain that your financial situation is not as it once was. Each time that you get a bounce charge, there are other debits outstanding – you try to cover the charge but sometimes you are not quick enough. Ask if there is any way for her/him to credit these back to your account. (If you only have had a few – they will almost always credit back some or all)
3). Change Banks. Just don’t leave any cheques outstanding. They all share information, and if you leave cheques or fee’s outstanding, the new bank will simply close your account.
You are probably young. This will change as you get older.

I am writing to back-up Grille Girl. Until you have written confirmation from the New York Alcoholic Beverage board – DO NOTHING!
I have heard many stories about restaurants and bars that assumed that since they had applied that they either could start serving, could start serving in a new area, extend their hours, etc. EACH TIME, the ABC has stepped in and imposed fines, shut operations (One friend had to shut down for 30 days! AND spend $7,000 in lawyers fee’s to only get shut down for 30 days!) and put further limitations on the soon to be issued/expanded license.
They are not there to represent you — They are there to regulate alcohol! You may pay thousands in fee’s – but as a small business they really couldn’t care less. Change your venue to Madison Square Garden – Then they’ll sit up and take notice!

The latter two also still have catalog shopping, but will charge for you to get the catalog – refunded after first order.

It’s probably too late and the restaurant will already be full, but there is Oggy’s Pizza. It’s in Fenton Marketplace, about 1/2 mile West of the Stadium on Friars Road.
Most everything else is much farther, but a mile East you have Black Angus, Several decent Mexican Restaurants and some fast food.

Where are the good Soul Food Restaurants?

One of my favorites, and its not just because of the food – The Owners are GREAT! : MAGNOLIA’S
It’s at Market & Euclid Ave.(In the Marketplace Shopping Center) Southeast San Diego (15 Frwy & 94 Frwy)
In San Diego, it’s as authentic as you are going to get! The prices for some entrees are a little high – this is Southern Cooking! They do have some Soul Dishes (I would call Bessie Johnson or one of her staff if you are looking for something specific – they try to please EVERYONE!)
They are open late most nights – I think that they are closed on Mondays or at least earlier on Sundays.
I know, this is not Chicago Soul Food – But you will leave there needing to wipe the smirk off of everyone else’s face who proclaims that they have Down Home Southern Food!
You won’t be dissapointed!

I’d like to add to that list; Qualcomm, Inc. (5 cafes), Kyocera (1 cafe) and Caterpillar (Gen Dyn) (4 cafes). Automobile Club (1 cafe) Jack in the Box ( 2 cafes — but I think one is actually a Jack in The Box ~~ ).

I noticed that part of your question had to do with “Rental Property” – At $1500 – Look also at the following communities:
Normal Heights
North Park (South Park is better but usually not much available for rent)
Hillcrest (It’s called “Bohemian”, that means Gay, Old and Yuppie)
They are all near the Freeway system.
Also,
Bay Park
College Area
Point Loma/Loma Portal
Ocean Beach
These area’s are not as freeway close, have rentals but parking is usually at a premium.
You also might be able to find a deal in the downtown area (SEE jit’s response on the Craig’s list) – But parking again might be a difficulty.

I’ve not found anything like I have found in Los Angeles or Miami. There is a place, however, on Moreno Boulevard – Near the 8 Freeway and just East of the 5 Freeway.

I haven’t been in a few years, It was good (Not Great) and for a San Diego version of something, wasn’t a disappointment.

Like I said, just opened about 5 months ago. I haven’t tried but I have heard decent stuff. Live entertainment near/on weekends.

There is nothing like Christmas at the Del. They deck the place out and you’ld swear that there was magic in the air. They used to do a set menu or 4 or 5 entree’s on the Holidays. The restaurant has changed to the “1500 ” and the new Executive Chef may have made a few changes.
George’s at the Cove (There are 2 Restaurants)
1250 Prospect Street (In Old La Jolla)

George Hauer and his staff know that any night is special and they always meet the need. This is the place that I take my out of town friends/relatives to when I want them to envy more than my beautiful City!

I had friends that used to work here years ago. I was with a friend and the two of use were looking for Thanksgiving Dinner. I called a week before and was told they were booked from 6:00pm forward for the night. I asked about 5:45 and they had an opening. We got there and were brought to the upstairs loft, had attentive service, a Great Meal (I love their tableside Salad Bar) and the prices were incredible! Parking can be a bear — but they do have Valet on holidays (Not-Validated)

This is an old standby! You may think that you’ve made a mistake when you walk up to the entrance and notice that there are two signs. 1 is for $11.95 Maine Lobster and the other is for a Free Meal on your Birthday. The appearance of a surfboard near the front door may also scare you! Nothing could be further from the truth! The interior is warm with a beautiful view of the Harbor and some of the city lights. The Holiday menu is fixed with 4 or 5 entree’s but I have always loved everything! The service is superb and I have never felt rushed!
Comments were made that “Don’t Do it!” and “Eat at home!” I have managed and waited tables/bartended at Restaurants and Nightclubs in San Diego since 1988! I have always known that I am working on the Holidays. If I have to be there I want to make money, so I would hope that you, the customers, would want to be there as well.
The restaurants I have listed you would feel at ease in most dress. I would check with the Hotel Del to make sure that the 1500 doesn’t have a dress code. There is a chance that these restaurants will be busy. Relax – don’t be in a hurry — you will have an excellent time at any of the places that I have mentioned.

I ate recently at the Torino’s in Eastlake. For Eastlake – the food was plausible. It’s Olive Garden with better salads and SLIGHTLY better service (Although, the Eastlake location seemed to be pressed to offer much more).
You won’t get sick, but you won’t rave either. After the long trip to Eastlake – I was just happy to not be in traffic!
